Zooxanthellae are single-celled, photosynthetic dinoflagellates that form symbiotic relationships with various marine invertebrates, most notably corals. These microorganisms play a critical role in coral reef ecosystems by providing essential nutrients through photosynthesis, while receiving shelter and metabolic waste products from their hosts. Their presence is fundamental to the health and survival of coral reefs, which are among the most biodiverse and productive ecosystems on Earth.
