For several decades, Tributyltin (TBT) was used as a bottom paint on hulls of ships. It reduces the growth of organisms on the hulls and so increase the speed of teh ships. Unfortunately TBT leaches out into teh ocean's environment and there it is highly toxic to many organisms.

TBT was banned by international organizations starting about 1990.
